I am thrilled to have Steve Lensink join us again on the Four12 podcast. Steve was named Producer of the Year at the Canadian Gospel Music Awards in 2020. And in this episode, we chat about serving at church during pandemic and post-pandemic times and how that impacts expectations and opportunities for serving.  If you have any role in bringing your church service online, this chat will be right up your alley.  If you have ever watched a church service online (and who hasn't in the last 18 months?!), then Steve will give you a good idea of what goes on behind-the-scenes.

Production Now

• Everyone has had to catch up and be online
• Live stream and prerecording, what does that look like?
• Keeping it consistent with different volunteers
• Ongoing learning

 Biggest Change

• Removal of in-person worship has been the biggest change for editing and mixing
• It's changed our serving experiences
• Harder to lead online than in person
• Harder to edit and mix with out any feedback from audience
• "You never see the fruit of your labour"

Expectations

• People expect broadcasts to be well done
• More professional and bigger churches are side by side online with ours
• People get used to seeing a larger production quality and expect it from smaller ones

Ways to Keep Up

• Recognize that people have high expectations
• Invest time, money and energy into your online experience
• Use what you have as a local church, which is a local connection
• Understand your identity and what you do well, then do that with excellence

Ways to Think About Online

• It's essentially another campus
• Need to invest in it like its another location
• Realize there is time that needs to be invested
• There's a learning curve 
• It's worthwhile and makes a difference
• To reach people that maybe wouldn't have come to your building before

Unified Sound for Mixing

• Use a template to start from the same place
• Helps to keep it consistent
• Easier for multiple people to be able to volunteer and keep a similar feel
• Use the template just as a guide
• Layout expectation guidelines for volunteers
• Know what you are doing

Unique Ways to Train Volunteers

• Now we have pre-recorded content that we can use for training
• Let them practice in advance
• Practice is low pressure because it's not live

Getting Youth Involved

• Great way to get youth involved and engage with them
• They already know some of this stuff due to apps they use
• Post mixing and editing is more appealing to youth
• They can learn how to record
• Think about what the youth will be able to do in the next 10 years

Nurturing a Healthy Team

• Onboarding is very similar to before, get started during a series
• Have to work a little hard because not face to face
• More pursuing people
• Every Monday worship leader does a little video to encourage the team and give updates
• Engage in a virtual way
• One on one connection is so important
• Try to connect people together as much as possible

Ways to Grow Your Skills

• Online videos
• Try to look for new ways to learn
• Consume content as much as possible
• Get the multitrack from the worship pastor and practice
• Watch other services and try to learn how they do it
• It's hard to feel motivated on your own, but set your mind to do it

How to Grow Your Production Area

• Look for church service production groups on Facebook to get help
• There is a community of people who want to help you
• Use videos online

 To Those That are Serving Now

• Leaders, get feedback from the congregation and pass it along to the team
• Keep an encouragement loop going
